英国牛津大学西马斯·帕里教授编选的《柯尔律治论作家与创作》收集了柯氏大部分散落在外的、100多年来未曾公开出版发表的关于文学的言论,以注释的方式、独到的编排形式对柯尔律治关于创作和作家的言论进行了归纳性、考证性研究。该书融文献资料的珍贵性、内容编排形式上的独到新颖性与实用性和学术研究的指导性于一体,是一部极具价值的、不可多得的研究柯尔律治创作思想的重要著作。

塞缪尔·泰勒·柯尔律治在中外文学界都一直被认为是英国浪漫主义诗人当中最具哲学深度与浪漫诗学思想于一体的文学理论家。英国剑桥大学著名学者约翰·比尔的系列丛书《柯尔律治的反应:关于文学批评、圣经与自然作品选》(Coleridge’sResponses:SelectedWritingsonLiteraryCriticism,theBibleandNature,2008)的出版为我们研究柯尔律治提供了针对性强、选材面广的难得的第一手资料,而这部系列丛书的第一部同时也应该是最重要的一部、由牛津大学著名学者西马斯·帕里(SeamusPerry)编写的《柯尔律治论作家与创作》(ColeridgeonWritersandWriting
)则更应该是我们客观、深层了解科氏创作思想轨迹以及其文学理论内核的忠实依托。西马斯·帕里是英国牛津大学著名学者,主要研究1660年至今的英国文学,其中对英国浪漫主义诗歌及其思想的研究造诣颇深,已有多部研究柯尔律治著作先后出版:《s,T,柯尔律治》(S.T.Coleridge)、《柯尔律治的笔记:选读》(Coleridge’sNotebooks)、《柯尔律治:采访与回忆》(S.TColeridge:InterviewsAndRecollections)和《柯尔律治和部分的用途》(Co-1eridgeandtheUsesofDivision)等,我们可以确定西马斯·帕里对柯尔律治研究的深度和广度。2008年帕里又编写出版了这本系列丛书《科勒律治的反应:关于文学批评、圣经与自然作品选》的第一部《科勒律治论作家与创作》,虽然为资料收集形式,但是本书所选取的具体内容及其内容安排的方式为我们了解和研究科氏创作思想提供了非常珍贵的文献帮助、极其实际的研究指导和比较明确的学术意义。
首先,本书极具资料的文献价值性,把柯尔律治大部分散落在外的、一百多来未曾公开出版发表的科氏关于文学的论述、演讲、旁注以及别人的记录或摘录等收集起来,以详实的出处信息展示这些论断的来源:具体演讲、重要论述、写给具体文人的具体书信以及书写的具体时间等。从这些未曾公开的资料中,我们更能体会柯氏诗学思想的本质内核,更能感悟到作为一代伟人的柯尔律治的创作视野。
其次,本书凸显的第二大特色是内容编排方式的独到新颖性和实用性。柯尔律治文学论著宽泛、宏大,帕里采用注释的方式,以独到的编排顺序对柯尔律治关于创作与作家的言论进行了考证性研究,第一部分以时间顺序编排了柯尔律治比较全面的关于创作的论述,《笔记》中的'摘录、讲稿中比较宽泛的讨论和节略、《朋友》、《文学传记》、《桌边杂谈》里关于诗歌与想象的描述等。从这些公开的和大部分未曾公开的资料中,我们了解了柯尔律治的创作思想轨迹以及其本质内核:无论他一开始对诗歌和诗人的论述、对十四行诗本质的观点、对阅读与读者的理解、对戏剧与其它文学形式创作的解释、对机械幻想与有机想象的阐释以及最后又回到诗歌诗人本质论上,我们看到了一个在文学理论方面老道成熟的文学理论家,而他几乎所有阐述的中心词总是强调“整体”,虽然他用不同的英文词汇“union”“u-nity”“oneness”“whole”“totality”等,强调“有机的想象”即“organicimagination”。
由此,我们看到,柯尔律治创作思想不是一蹴而成,更不是突兀来风,它有一个坚实的基础内核和一个渐进完善的过程。第二部分以作家为词条,以字母顺序编排了柯尔律治对具体作家以及其作品彰显的风格、品格、文化意义等的看法与评价,把柯尔律治散见于其广泛的文学论著中的对世界作家的评论和认识集中起来,让我们很好地看到了柯氏的创作视野、他的知识面的广度与深度。比如从柯尔律治1795年的演讲中对马克·阿肯塞得(MarkAkenside)的评论看到了柯尔律治对“整体”和“想象”的强调,从他对亚里斯多德、培根的评述我们看到了柯氏对哲学与科学以及文学批评的认识,从他对丹尼尔·笛福及其《罗鲁宾逊漂流记》的言论,我们又看到了一个极具人文思想的柯尔律治等等。
总之,帕里把柯尔律治对众多世界作家的评论收集一起,这些归纳性材料如实反映了柯氏本人的研究深度和创作主张。同时,柯尔律治能汲取所有对其思想有益的智慧,以他自己的天才进行有机的综合与想象,这是柯尔律治创作思想的精髓,也是他作为诗人和文学评论家不懈追求和努力辩护的目标,这一目标在他那三首争论最多、又最不被人看好的长诗《老水手》、《忽必烈汗》和《克丽丝特贝尔》中得以最佳的实现。
第三,本书为我们深度了解和研究柯氏诗学思想提供了指导性的参考。该书分前后两大部分,就具体材料的内容而言,紧紧围绕并突出了柯尔律治创作思想的核心是和谐与整体(harmonyandunity)的主题。就第一部分讲,几乎所有选用的小节,无论是谈诗歌与诗人,还是谈幻想与想象的区别,中心词汇离不开“和谐”与“整体”,用柯尔律治的话文学创作就好像是一种植物的“有机生长”。柯尔律治创作的《老水手》、《忽必烈汗》和《克丽丝特贝尔》等三首长诗从内容到形式也的确体现了柯尔律治融众多不协调因素于一“整体”的诗学思想,因此也总被看成是柯尔律治为数不多诗作中的最伟大诗篇。柯尔律治诗歌思想的灵魂首先是赞同华兹华斯的创作主张,即情感的自然流露,反对十八世纪新古典主义的那种机械主义理论;但是,柯尔律治发展并提升了浪漫主义的诗歌创作理论,认为诗歌创作应该是一个有机体的自然生长过程,自然与艺术不是对立的关系,而是可以融为一体的,诗人的能力和职责就是要融合所有对立不一的因素,融所有有机元素而最终形成一个和谐的整体。《柯尔律治论作家与创作》从创作论到作家论始终把这一中心放在首要位置,我们看到了科氏文学理论的内核。柯尔律治在谈到短短的十四行诗歌时也同样强调“整体性”:“我认为思想的整体性是十四行诗所必不可少的”,“十四行诗对我来说是最美的,他们在理智的世界和物质的世界之间创造了一种永久的融合”(Perry3-4)。
实际上,柯尔律治有时也仿照德国哲学家康德在《目的论的判断》中的著名论述来描述其关于有机体的关系,他认为生命整体的各个部分都是相互依存的,每一个部分都既是手段也是目的。把对立物综合成更高的第三体,它的各个组成部分既相异又相同,柯尔律治把这种功能归于美学领域中的想象——在他《文学传记》中所描述的“善于综合的神奇的力量”,这种力量“在使相反的、不协调的性质平衡或和谐中显示出自己来”(coleridge15—16)。
因此。柯尔律治强调创作中想象力的发挥是因为想象的整体性不是把“没有生成力的微粒”机械地并置起来,也不是新古典主义的部分的得体性,而是一个有机整体:它是一个自生系统,由各部分在生命上的相互依赖所组成;如果离开了整体,部分就不能生存。
